Fort Collins was founded in 1864 as a military outpost aimed to protect the mail route that ran through it. Following the city's military years, the addition of Colorado State University greatly influenced the growth and character of this northern city.
Greeley was named for Horace Greeley, the New York newspaper man who, he himself, took the advice he later made famous to, "go west young man!"

The history of Windsor began when a settler named J.L. Hilton built a small house located half-way between Fort Collins and Greeley.
